Careers In Engineering And Science
Careers In Engineering And ScienceA degree in engineering or science could be the top choice for young people hoping to maximise their career and salary prospects, according to Dr Stuart Ashenden, Director of Academic Planning at the University of Greenwich at Medway. These degrees are still an option for school and college leavers who chose to study arts and humanities at A-level. They can sign up for a special four-year BEng (Hons) degree course available at the universityıs School of Engineering, or a special BSc (Hons) Extended Science course available at the School of Science both based at the University of Greenwich at Medway campus at Chatham Maritime. "Many people, including the CBI, are getting concerned because not enough people are studying traditional science subjects at A-level and university, and they are foreseeing a national shortage of qualified engineers and scientists. "It is becoming increasingly clear that already our science and engineering graduates are extremely well placed in the jobs market. "They are gaining well-paid career jobs in such fields as civil, marine, mechanical and electrical engineering while our science graduates are heading off into the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, health and clinical science professions and sports and exercise business. "In science, the pattern is just the same with employers seeking to develop existing valued employees rather than face the difficult and uncertain challenges of recruitment," he said. Dr Ashenden added that while science A-levels were the standard route to applying for an engineering or science course it is not the only approach. "Engineering and science degrees are a good option for mature students with industry experience who want to upgrade their skills."
