You can't talk about the history of Medway without mentioning its military heritage. The closure of the Chatham Dockyard in 1984 was the end of an era and a significant economic blow for Kent. The dockyard is still exerting a powerful influence, and it's at the heart of the transformation of the area. Regeneration in Medway is targeting a rate of economic growth double that of the rest of the UK and a planned 20,000 new jobs in the next 15 years. The latest of these regeneration projects has just been given the green light. Chatham Waters will create hundreds of dwellings, new shops and a significant leisure facility.
At any one time Medway Council employs about 7,000 people, making it one of the biggest employers in Medway as well as Kent. A significant number of people work at the corporate headquarters at Gun Wharf in Chatham, other jobs are based at locations around the Medway towns in places as varied as; schools, social services centres, leisure facilities, countryside parks, heritage sites and local arts centres.
