Considering a career in the Merchant Navy? There are currently over 20,000 British seafarers serving at sea, in addition to over a thousand cadets. Opportunities exist in navigation, engineering and catering & hospitality.

With training and experience it is possible for suitable candidates to progress to the rank of; Captain, Chief Engineer or even Hotel Services Manager. Training is conducted in a nautical college or university and worldwide aboard ships.

Once qualified Merchant Seamen typically receive good rates of pay and generous leave allowances.

The main career areas include: Navigation Officers, Engineer Officers, Hotel Services Officers, Deck Ratings, Engine Room Ratings, Cooks and Stewards.

For people with successful experience at sea longer term careers are available in areas like: Harbours & Ports, Academia, Marine Insurance, Marine Leisure, Pilotage, Surveying and Vessel Traffic Management.
