Kent has more prisons, more than any other county. About a fifth of Kent Probation Area's officers work in prison. probation Service Officers work with offenders to protect the public and reduce crime. The Probation Service works to ensure public safety and the proper punishment of offenders by effective supervision in the community.

Their five key aims are:

  • Protecting the public
  • Reducing re-offending
  • The proper punishment of offenders in the community
  • Ensuring offenders' awareness of the effects of crime on their victims of crime and the public
  • Rehabilitation of offenders

Kent Probation Area has over 500 staff spread across offices in all Kent districts, a 25-bed Approved Premises and nine Kent prisons: HMP's Elmley, Swaleside and Standford Hill on the Isle of Sheppy; Cookham Wood and Rochester, in Rochester;  East Sutton Park in Sutton Valance; Blantyre House in Cranbrook; Canterbury; and Maidstone. the Kent Probation Area also serve 10 Magistrates' Courts and two Crown Courts, at Canterbury and Maidstone. The Service supervises over 7,900 offenders each year.  

Want To Be A Probation Officer?

A qualified Probation Officer has successfully gained the Diploma in Probation Studies (DipPS), which is a recognised professional qualification.

The two-year training for the qualification is managed across England and Wales through nine consortia of Probation areas working with higher education institutions and NVQ assessment centres.

The DipPS is an integrated award made up of a BA (Hons) degree in Community Justice and a National Vocational Qualification in Community Justice (NVQ) at Level 4.

Entry requirements:

You must be at least 20-years-old by the date of your anticipated appointment as a trainee. This is because you must be at least 22-years-old to be appointed as a Probation Officer.

For those over 25 no formal qualifications are required. The following educational qualifications are required for those under 25, but you are advised to check details with the South East Regional Probation Training Consortium at College House, Woodbridge Road, Guildford, Surrey GU1 4RS (telephone 01483 304963).

Candidates under 21 – 2 passes at A level and 3 at GCSE or 3 at A level and 1 at GCSE

Candidates over 21 but under 25 - 5 passes at GCSE

Volunteers

Volunteer mentors give time to helping people into work, assisting with literacy and numeracy needs, housing schemes and the resettlement of prisoners upon release.
