Southern Water has responsibility for the recovery and treatment of water across the South East; East Sussex, Hampshire, Kent, Isle of Wight and West Sussex. It also provides potable water to about half the households in the same area; about 995,000.
The birth of Southern Water can be traced to the The Water Act of 1973 which led to the formation of the Southern Water Authority (SWA). When the UK's water industry was privatised in the late 1980s Southern Water Services Ltd was formed. The company has been brought and sold several times in the last 14 years.
In terms of its network Southern Water has 13,412 km of water mains, 390 pumping stations, 95 water treatment plants and 106 boreholes.
They employ about 1,700 people across the region, their operations stretch from from Birchington in the East to Bournemouth in the West. New vacancies are published all the time on the recruitment website. Most vacancies were full time and permanent but there are some part-time vacancies from time to time.
The company has entered into partnership with Babcock International and the Royal Navy to create a modern apprenticeship. The first year of the four year scheme requires a six month placement with HMS Sultan combined with six months work based training. Much of the following three years is a cycle of four days job training to one day at college. Southern Water apprentices can count on regular support and management from assessors and supervisory staff.
There is also regular support from mentors, assessors and line managers, appointed by Southern Water or VT Flagship.
