DSH Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors has reinforced its long-standing commitment to supporting the local community after donating £500 to Maidstone-based charity The Blackthorn Trust. Follow this link for more of our community features.
DSH made the donation as part of a client survey. As an incentive to complete the form, clients who took part had their names entered into a blind draw to win the £500 for a charity of their choice.
Dr David McGavin, a senior partner at the Blackthorn Medical Centre, was the lucky client chosen from the 300-plus returned surveys, and asked for the donation to be made to the Trust.
The Trust – comprising of the medical centre, working gardens and a community café - provides medical care, rehabilitation and social welfare services to those suffering serious or long-term illnesses.
Mike Startup, the partner at DSH responsible for the Blackthorn Medical Centre, said: “We are delighted to donate this sum to The Blackthorn Trust, as the charity relies solely on donations to continue its work.
“We like to support local community charities and projects any way we can. DSH is a local firm, both here in Maidstone, and in Rickmansworth, where our other office is sited.
“Our staff are pretty much all local, as are so many of our clients, which means we are part of the same community as those in need of help.”
Dr McGavin said: “We are delighted to have won such a generous amount of money from DSH. Selecting the Blackthorn Trust as our chosen charity was an obvious option. It’s a charity that’s incredibly close to my heart and working for the Trust means I get to see the difference the donation will make first hand.”
Emma Halpin, Community Fundraiser for the Blackthorn Trust, added: “Relying solely on donations, DSH’s donation is fundamental to the Blackthorn Trust. It means we can continue our work making a difference in the community and to our patients.”
DSH are committed to supporting local communities and in keeping with this commitment it allocates each of its staff two paid working days a year to volunteer at local projects, this equates to some 1,500 working hours a year of voluntary work. DSH is also dedicated to fundraising activities for Demelza Children’s Hospice, Shelterbox and Children in Need.

Kent community news
Kent is home to thousands of local charities and not for profit community groups. They serve local people and support a wide range of good causes at home and abroad. Behind every organisation is a person or group of people committed to making a difference to the object of their good cause. At Yourcounty we aim to provide free coverage of any local organisation looking for some promotion within these pages.
How can we help?
If you send us some relevant and original copy, we'll publish it within our community section where possible. Across the website we receive more submissions for inclusion that we can use but for the community pages we try to find a home for all worthy material that we receive. As long as the information is connected to a good cause and linked to Kent in some way we're likely to find a way to use it.
Your feedback counts
The Yourcounty community pages really only scratch the surface of the not for profit activity in the county. We generally publish material as we receive it. If you or your organisation has a story to tell or wants to make some suggestions about the quality or quantity of our coverage let us know. Please type 'community' in the title of your email.
