Down House In Downe The Former Home To Charles Darwin

An Important Historical And Scientific Attraction, Darwin's House in Downe

Welcome to our Down House page. If you've visited this or similar attractions in Kent we'd like to hear from you. Our feedback information is at the bottom of the page. For more places to visit in and around the area check out our Discover Kent page.

Down House is a fascinating building in its own right but its primary claim to fame is as the home of Charles Darwin for over 40 years. Down House provides an excellent opportunity to gain an insight into the mind and work of one of Britain's greatest scientists/thinkers. The static and interactive displays and free audio tour give the visitor the chance to follow in Darwin's footsteps in understanding evolution and tell us a little of the life of Darwin the man. Downe is a beautiful part of the Kent countryside and when you are there it's hard to believe that the centre of London is only 15 miles away by train.

Down House presents a great opportunity for anyone interested in Charles Darwin or the history of science. As a day out it may struggle to hold the interest of younger children.

Pre-booking is necessary for groups, it takes 90 to 120 minutes to view the attraction. Limited parking 50 yards distant. Contact Down House direct to confirm details.

Don’t miss the study where he wrote ‘On the Origin of Species’ and take a walk down his ‘thinking path’. You can also relax on the veranda and in the gardens or have a bite to eat in the tearoom.

  • There is wheelchair access and lifts to the first floor
  • The tearoom is available during the normal house opening hours
  • Please note that no picnics allowed on site
  • Dogs are not allowed on site
  • There ois an audio-visual tour available
