It was built between 1450 and 1486 on the site of a much older property for the Archbishop of England, Thomas Bourchier. The original house was enlarged by the 1st Earl of Dorset and has remained largely unaltered ever since. The furniture comes from a variety of sources but is principally the responsibility of the 6th Earl. There are 13 state rooms open to the public The furniture on view includes fine 17th Century state beds as well as some important silver work. The portraits at Knole include paintings by Gainsborough, Van Dyck, and Reynolds. Knole is easily accessible by public
transport, Sevenoaks BR station is just over a mile away and there is car
parking on site. The estate includes beautiful gardens and the deer park
which are open to the public at set times. There is a tea room and gift
shop and there is disabled access to some parts of the house and gardens. Access
