Although medieval in origin, Penshurst Place retains the warmth and character of a family home. It has been the residence of Kings and noblemen as well as the ancestral seat of the Sidney family since 1552, when it was gifted by King Edward VI to Sir William Sydney. The architectural highlight is the Baron's Hall, built in 1341 for Sir John de Pulteney, four times Lord Mayor of London. The gardens are magnificent in their own right and in some respects share the heritage of the Place. They are a living record of Elizabethan garden design and one of the oldest gardens in private ownership with records dating back to 1346. Opening (28 March to 30 October 2011) :
