The Salutation Tea Rooms - The Secret Gardens Of Sandwich - English County Garden Style
Set in the
delightful grounds of The Salutation house and gardens, visitors can
enjoy a hint of decadence inspired by prestigious London hotel, The
Savoy. The famous Strand hotel closed for refurbishment in December last
year and The Salutation owner’s Stephanie and Dominic Parker went along
to the sale held by Bonhams: “We love the iconic style that The Savoy
conjures up and wanted to create just a small slice of that here in our
own tea room. “Of course, the ‘S’ inscribed on many of The Savoy pieces
also does nicely for Salutation!” The Parkers bid successfully for a
number of lots which now take pride of place. From tables to wall lamps
and cake stands to crockery, the inimitable Savoy style is everywhere.
The surroundings are just one speciality at this establishment though -
the menu also tempts with its simple but scrumptious offerings. Three
different types of cream teas, home-made sandwiches, soups and cakes vie
for attention alongside yummy ice cream by Ashford-based, Simply Ice
Cream. Most of the produce is locally sourced, including the delicious
hand-made bread, delivered daily by TV baker Paul Hollywood from his
Artisan Bread Co. in Wingham.
Angela Russell and Carolyn Barrow, both from Deal, have been recruited
to run the operation. In a stroke of fortunate timing, long-time friends
and previous work colleagues met Stephanie Parker by chance shortly
before the Tea Room was due to open. Angela said: “I was ready for a new
project and Carolyn had just finished her job too. It must have been
meant. “We’ve both worked as cooks before so home-baking really
appealed. “I also love the fact that it’s a beautiful place for local
people to use whenever they want as garden entry is not required.”
The Tea Room is open to anyone between 10am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday,
for morning coffee, light lunches, afternoon teas or a refreshing glass
of wine or cold beer. It seats 20 inside and a further 44 on the deck
outside under the tree canopy.
