The restoration of a direct cross channel
link between Dover and Boulogne is playing an important part in the
continued plan to regenerate the UK visitor market to a town and port held
in the affections of British visitors for many years.
Ongoing improvements are being made to
improve the appeal of the town itself, the medieval city centre, tourist
attractions, boulevards, shops, restaurants, hotels and the town
generally. These include:
- the charming Old Town (Haute Ville)
developed as a total touristic area
- major refurbishment to the Chateau Musee
in the Old Town
- renovation of many of Boulogne's
traditional houses
- new look to the daily fish market stalls
on the Quayside Gambetta
- full programme of summer festivals and
events in the town
- attractive covered pedestrian walkway on
the first bridge (Pont Marguet) linking the port to the town
- long term projects include the
construction of a new ferry terminal, opening of more luxury category
hotels in Boulogne
- an autoroute link road from the port
connecting with the A16 to Paris and entire French motorway system

Boulogne-sur-Mer and neighbouring Etaples have a deep-rooted fishing
tradition which has contributed to Boulogne being named as France's

served in numerous ways : salted, smoked, marinated or simply grilled. The
Herring Festivals in November are the best time to try it.
