2009 marks the centenary of Louis Blériot’s great achievement. The year has been declared “Louis Blériot Year” in Cambrai and numerous celebrations and events will be commemorating both the figure of Louis Blériot himself and the birth of aviation throughout the spring and summer of 2009.

Two exhibitions examine the person of Louis Blériot, his inventions and of course his feat, and also his family, his age and his ties to the town of Cambrai where he was born. One of these exhibitions is being held in the Cambrai district tourist office, the other in the town hall.

Visitors looking for an original approach can explore the history of aviation and Louis Blériot’s achievement in a different way with several events, including a model planes fair presenting one hundred years of aviation through 100 reduced scale models.

The cinema and music will also pay their tribute to Louis Blériot : the “Le Palace” cinema will be staging a special programme of 5 films for its aviation films week, one of them an outdoor performance, and the Juventus music festival will be holding an evening concert dedicated to Blériot.

Enthusiasts of grand spectacular events have not been left out. A prestigious air show will be held at Cambrai-Niergnie airfield presenting the story of aviation and legendary machines.
