Visiting Cambrai, Cambrai Tourist Guide

Cambrai is set in the Escaut Valley at the Hainaut and Artois plateaus. Famed as a place of art and history, Cambrai offers visitors a rich architectural and cultural heritage of seventeen centuries. Cambrai's origins go back to the Gallo-Roman period. Its precise foundation is now unknown. It was called Camaracum or Camaraco by the Romans and has been of particular; military, social and ecclesiastical importance since the 4th century.

There are a large number of military cemeteries in the Cambrai area ( Le Cambrésis ), we include a list at the foot of the page. For complete details visit the Cambrai Tourism website. The cemeteries have been permanently granted to the Imperial War Graves Commission are laid out like English gardens and are places of contemplation.

The town has around 35,000 inhabitants, Cambrai is twinned with Gravesend.

  • Musée des Beaux-Arts (fine art museum) - Installed in the Hôtel de Francqueville (1720), the museum houses one of the richest collections of the North region. - 15, rue de l'Epée, F-59400 Cambrai.

Activities to carry out in Cambrai include:
