What To See In Dunkirk, Dunkirk Tourist Information

If you need information about the Dover - Dunkirk ferry route, visit the Ferrry to France pages. Dunkirk has France's third-ranking port, it handles heavy bulk cargo as well as cross-Channel ferry traffic.

Dunkirk has been a popular destination for British tourists for many years. The population of the commune is now about 250,000 but this is increased in the summer months by tourists.

This history of Dunkirk has seen the town at the centre of many military disputes. It has been held by English, French, Dutch and even Spanish forces during its history. When under English control the town was sold to the French by Charles II, the English King in 1662.

In more recent times the town was the scene of the mass evacuation of the Britsih Expeditionary Force during WWII. In May 1940, when allied troops were completely encircled in the area, Winston Churchill requested that every vessel able to make the trip should travel from England to pick up soldiers from the French port. By the conclusion of 'Operation Dyanmo' nearly a third of a million allied troops had been rescued. The town saw more fighting and extensive bombing during the rest of the war.
