The area of Étaples has probably been inhabited since the Palaeolithic era. Since which time the fortunes of the communities that have inhabited the region have fluctuated under natural and man made conditions. Known by the Romans as Quentovicus Etaples has been a port for hundreds of years. The ninth century was particularly traumatic for Etaples as the area suffered devastating attacks from Vikings.
BY the 11th century things had started to become more stable, Etaples was granted a royal charter and polictical and administrative functions were gradually developed.
The 13th 14th and 15th centuries were times of conflict and turmoil, destruction was brought to the town by a number of armies including English forces. In the 19th century Etaples enjoyed some increased prosperity, the population more than doubled, thanks in no small part to the arrival of the railway. Notwith standing two turbulent world wars and many hardships Etaples has continued to develop and its population now stands at 12,000, nearly three times greater that in 1901!

- Seaman's Calvary
- Built in 1818, it was originally made of a wooden cross. Restored in 1998, it is the symbolic place for the families of sailors who died at sea, whose names are now engraved on the monument.

- Herring King Festival - November 2012
The people of Etaples invite you to a high-spirited event where the tasting of herring will rival the wealth of the programme of cultural activities. This major autumn event celebrates fish! Over two days, three tonnes of herring will be cooked and devoured. In the port of Etaples. Nearly 3 tons are eaten over this weekend; fresh herrings grilled on big barbecues, pickled herring or smoked accompanied by a glass of wine and served by a hundred Etaploise proud of this tradition and dressed in the traditional costumes. Every year 10,000 people take the bait of this great event.
