Saint-Omer

Along with Boulogne-sur-Mer, Cambrai and Roubau. Saint-Omer is one of the four towns in the Nord-Pas de Calais which belong to the French network of Artistic and Historic Towns. It also belongs to the Association of Historic Towns of the Euroregion, co-founded with Bruges and Canterbury.

Tourist and visitor attractions in St Omer include The Notre-Dame cathedral (and the many works of art it houses including the great organ case of «les Piette», a painting by Rubens representing Jesus’ Deposition and the nocturnal and astrological clock. The «Grand Place», the City Hall and its Italianate theatre, the Hotel Sandelin, a Flemish-style kitchen (serving as the backdrop for a large earthenware collection), collections of shells and fossils and a natural history section… in the museum Dupuis, the ruins of Saint-Bertin’s abbey, the formal French garden and the splendid arboretum, the Haut-Pont and the Lysel, the typical market gardeners’ districts.

St Omer also has an open air market on Saturday morning in place Foch. Or visitors might enjoy a visit to the Hôtel de Berghes, a town house of Saint-Omer, regarded as a place of historic interest.
