War Museums in Calais - War Graves, Cemeteries & Memorials

War Museums in Calais - War Graves, Cemeteries & Memorials

The Calais area has witnessed its share of invasions over the centuries and the vestiges of the last conflict are everywhere in evidence. It was here that the Germans expected the arrival of allied troops and made their own preparations to strike at England.

War Museums in Calais - War Graves, Cemeteries & Memorials

Foremost among the constructions designed to rain death and destruction upon the English was the Eperlecques bunker built to fire V2 rockets into the heart of London.

  • You'll find the bunker at: Blockhaus, 62910 Eperlecques, it's about 2 miles outside Watten. Phone: 0033 321 884422

Even more ambitious was the V3 base at Mimoyecques equipped with 25 giant canons which in full operation could fire a shell into London and the south east of England every six seconds. Neither Mimoyecques nor Eperlecques succeeded due to allied air attacks.

  • The Mimoyecques museum is at: Fortresse de Mimoyecques, 62250 Landrethun-Le-Nord. Phone 0033 321 871034

The origins of the second world war in Poland through to the use of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima are graphically depicted at the museum at Ambleteuse.

  • Historique de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, CD 940 - 62164 Ambleteuse. Phone 0033 321 873301

At nearby Audinghen is the Atlantic Wall Museum located in a bunker which once housed a 380mm gun directed at allied shipping and Kent.

  • You'll find this museum at: Batterie Todt, 62179 Audinghen, Cap Gris Nez. Phone 0033 321 329733

Calais has its own museum situated in a bunker formerly used by the war time German navy as a command post. A total of 20 rooms display a large number of interesting objects relating to the conflict in the area.

  • The War Museum (Musée de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale) can be found at , Parc Saint-Pierre, Boulevard Jacquard, 62100 Calais, right in the heart of the town. Call 0033 321 342157 for more information.
