War Museums in Calais - War Graves, Cemeteries & Memorials
War Museums in Calais - War Graves, Cemeteries & MemorialsThe Calais area has witnessed its share of invasions over the centuries and the vestiges of the last conflict are everywhere in evidence. It was here that the Germans expected the arrival of allied troops and made their own preparations to strike at England. War Museums in Calais - War Graves, Cemeteries & MemorialsForemost among the constructions designed to rain death and destruction upon the English was the Eperlecques bunker built to fire V2 rockets into the heart of London.
Even more ambitious was the V3 base at Mimoyecques equipped with 25 giant canons which in full operation could fire a shell into London and the south east of England every six seconds. Neither Mimoyecques nor Eperlecques succeeded due to allied air attacks.
The origins of the second world war in Poland through to the use of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima are graphically depicted at the museum at Ambleteuse.
At nearby Audinghen is the Atlantic Wall Museum located in a bunker which once housed a 380mm gun directed at allied shipping and Kent.
Calais has its own museum situated in a bunker formerly used by the war time German navy as a command post. A total of 20 rooms display a large number of interesting objects relating to the conflict in the area.
