09/01/12 A Taste Of Success - Young Chef At Woods Restaurant
Members of the general public will have a unique opportunity to taste the cooking of the county’s outstanding winners of the Kent Young Chef Award 2011, when they book a place at the Kent Young Chef Award Charity Dinner – which is being held at Woods Restaurant on Thursday 19 January, from 7pm onwards. The gala evening, with three course meal and free glass of sparkling wine, costs just £25 per head, and will give the talented young chefs – Alice Browning and Phoebe Icke – a chance to showcase their cooking abilities and creativity alongside the dynamic head chef Tommy Ward. Alice Browning, the senior winner, has ambitions to become a top professional chef and restaurant owner one day and hopes to compete on TV’s nail biting Masterchef one day too. Having made the final of Kent Young Chef Award for three consecutive years, this bright young talent will be joined by the first time junior winner Phoebe Icke, who is just 11 years old. Alice and Phoebe spent a morning with Woods’ head chef in the New Year to plan the fantastic seasonal and regional menu which will feature Smoked Salmon and Dill Risotto with a Poached Quail’s Egg, followed by Beetroot, Redcurrant and Rosemary Basted Rack of Lamb served with Creamed Potatoes and Seasonal Vegetables and for dessert Dark Chocolate Panna cotta accompanied with Poached Pear. The evening is being generously hosted by Woods Restaurant, one of the competition’s sponsors, and restaurant owners Karen & Sheridan Wood will donate £5 from every ticket sold to a cause that is close to their hearts - the Hospice in the Weald. The county’s third and longest running young people’s cookery competition devised by Produced in Kent, was once again made possible by the vision and backing of the sponsors who include Hadlow College, kff, Woods Restaurant, Bar & Produce Store and new sponsors Whiting & Hammond. Julie Monkman, manager of Produced in Kent said: “This will certainly be a night to remember and a great chance to enjoy some outstanding culinary creations created by these talented young girls. I can’t think of a better way to shake off the January blues! There aren’t many places you can go in 2012 to enjoy a great three course meal for just £25 and the restaurant’s decision to donate a 20 per cent of ticket sales to Hospice in the Weald is a very generous gesture.” The Charity Dinner follows on from the dramatic final of the competition - the Live Cook Off, which was held for the first time at K College, Tonbridge at the end of November 2011. To be part of the Kent Young Chef Award Charity Dinner call 01892 614411 or visit www.woodsrestaurant.co.uk (all seats must be paid for in advance). The evening commences at 7pm with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine followed by a three-course meal for £25. For every ticket sold, Woods will make a £5 donation to Hospice in the Weald.
