03/04/08 Kent Farmers' Markets Association
- Launched today
“We want to make it easier to
shop at Kent’s Farmers’ Markets,” said Benjamin Dent, Chairman of the
Kent Farmers’ Market Association which was launched today. “And we’ve
begun by pulling together details of everyone’s nearest Markets on our
new website: www.kentfarmersmarkets.org.uk.”
The Association is an initiative of the managers of Kent’s 33 Farmers’
Markets. Mostly run by volunteers, there are already nearly 900 markets
a year across the County. “The major trend in food shopping is about
wanting to choose products which are healthier, greener and fairer. At
Farmers’ Markets, shoppers can buy fresh, quality, local products direct
from the producer. You are supporting the environment, animal welfare
and Kent’s economy and countryside too.”
Vice-Chairman, Bob Taylor who manages the Shipbourne Farmers’ Market,
added, “Farmers’ Markets also offer good value. Since products are
bought direct, there are no middlemen, shareholders or distribution
costs to pay. Surveys have shown that locally produced food sold at
Farmers’ Markets is usually cheaper, certainly fresher and often better
quality.”
Heather Hay Ffrench, author of Great British Food, said at the launch,
“Kent has a great range of Farmers’ Markets; from village halls to city
centres. I’m a great believer in being able to know exactly where your
food’s come from and in getting tips on how best to use it. Whether it’s
meat or vegetables; bread and cheese, or a pie ready for the oven, you
know the quality will be good.”
Ben, who also manages Penshurst Farmers’ Market, explained the benefits
to local farmers and small food producers too. “While I’m delighted to
see the increased sales in Fair Trade products from developing
countries, we need to get a fair deal for Kent’s farmers too – and
Farmers’ Markets and farm shops do just that. A profitable farming
industry offers the best protection for the countryside.”
Kent Farmers’ Market Association is now the largest county grouping of
Farmers’ Markets in the UK. Its new website
(www.kentfarmersmarkets.org.uk or www.kfma.org.uk) gives details of all
the Markets in Kent. It also has a diary page which can send automatic
email reminders about shoppers’ nearest markets. The website includes
advice on which foods are in season, as well as listing special events
and other news.
