PEOPLE from Kent are next month (March, 2014) being invited to take part in some greenfingered fundraising activities in aid of a children’s charity at a garden centre in the county.
Millbrook Garden Centre in Gravesend is hosting a coffee morning, planting demonstrations and a gardener’s question time during Garden Re-Leaf Day on March 14 to raise money for Greenfingers.
Matthew Upton, Manager of Millbrook Garden Centre on Station Road in Southfleet, explained: “We have organised several activities for anyone visiting us on Garden Re-Leaf Day, which is a nationwide initiative to encourage the horticultural industry to mark the start of spring by organising events in aid of Greenfingers. The charity creates gardens at children’s hospices across the UK.
“We will be hosting a coffee morning from 9am until 11.30am and people will be able to buy a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake for £1. Keen bakers will also be able to purchase a copy of our Millbrook Charity Baking Book for £2.50. All money raised from the sale of the cake and book will be donated to Greenfingers.
“At 10.30am and 3pm people who would like tips on how to plant up colourful containers will be able to watch demonstrations run by members of our plant team. At the end of each demonstration the container will be raffled off. Raffle tickets will cost £2 a strip.
“Jean Griffin and Andy Garland, who are part of the BBC Radio Kent Sunday Gardening show, will be on our Gardener’s Question Time panel ready to offer solutions to planting predicaments from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.”
In addition to this, visitors will be able to enter a raffle for a chance to win a gardening hamper or a Hartman Beckbury three seater bench, which has a RRP of £249.99. Tickets will cost £4 a strip. The raffle will be drawn on Sunday, March 16 at 3.15pm.
There will also be a gardening quiz sheet for people to complete at their leisure.
As well as creating awareness of gardening, one of the main aims of Garden Re-Leaf Day is to raise money for Greenfingers.
Greenfingers was launched in November 1998 by a group of volunteers drawn from all sectors of the gardening industry.
The gardens it creates are designed to help children and their families and friends during a very emotional and difficult time. To date, Greenfingers has created 41 gardens.
Matthew added: “To celebrate the Millbrook Family’s first birthday we will also be hosting a Fizz Night on March 14 from 6.30pm until 8.30pm. Members who attend the event will get a free glass of fizz or soft drink and canapés. There will also be 15% off purchases made on the night this excludes concessions, café purchases and gift cards.
“Members wishing to attend the Fizz Night are asked to email email@example.com or call 01474 331 135.
“The Millbrook Family is free to join and has been designed to treat people with personalised benefits and exclusive discounts at the garden centres and its cafés, and also at other places in the Gravesend area.
“Once you’re a member of our extended family, we’ll be in touch regularly by email to keep you in the loop on all of our seasonal top tips, offers and rewards. There will be plenty of exclusive extras all year round too.”
The Garden Re-Leaf Day activities will take place at Millbrook Garden Centre in Gravesend on Friday, March 14.
Millbrook Garden Centre is a family-run, independent garden centre. It provides customers with a wide range of quality plants, shrubs, trees, furniture, barbecues, gifts and food items.
Its friendly and knowledgeable staff are on-hand to give visitors help and advice on all gardening matters. Millbrook Garden Centre has its own nursery, where it grows a third of the plants sold at the centre in an attempt to reduce plant miles.
The Greencafé, which seats up to 90 customers, serves hot and cold drinks, snacks, breakfasts and light lunches, Sunday roasts and children’s meals using fresh, seasonal produce some of which is grown at the centre.
