20/01/10 £12m Wastewater Project - Canterbury
Southern Water is carrying out a £12 million project to secure and improve the wastewater infrastructure in Canterbury. The project includes the construction of an underground storm water storage tank on the former coach park site in Kingsmead Road and the building of an underground pumping station at Vauxhall Road. Gary Sayers, Senior Project Engineer for Southern Water, said: “The improvement works we are carrying out in Canterbury are vital to build more capacity into the sewerage network. At times of heavy rain the new storage tank will collect 900,000 litres of storm water which, once the bad weather has passed, will be pumped back into the wastewater system for cleaning at Canterbury Wastewater Treatment Works before returning to the Great Stour River. The new installations are mainly underground so that apart from security fencing, all that will be visible when the works are complete, are small green kiosks to house the control systems and electrical supplies, together with new manhole covers for the underground tank in Kingsmead Road.” This scheme is part of Southern Water’s five-year environmental improvement programme which is rolling out across Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. 4Delivery is a consortium comprising United Utilities, Costain and MWH. It is nearing the end of a £700 million programme of environmental improvements and water quality schemes for Southern Water across Kent, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
