Tally Ho - Pubs In Knockholt - Country Pubs In Kent

The Tally Ho pub is located in prime, commuter-belt country not far from Biggin Hill with its annual airshow. Leaving Knockholt south-west down Main Road, the Tally Ho is located on the right hand side of the road half a mile beyond the village sign. It's tempting to play the game of guessing how much the houses cost in the area, but the pub itself is a pleasant contrast, with reasonably priced, well-cooked, homely food.

With its whitewashed exterior the pub is adjacent to a large car park, so there should be no problems with parking even at busy times. To the side and rear of the building a large lawned garden has several tables with some trees and bushes to give cover during summer. A small adventure playground should keep kids amused during family visits.

The inside is quite traditional with plenty of dark wood panelling, and a beamed roof trailing hop vines, whilst a wood-burning stove provides extra warmth. A growing collection of worldwide paper currency gradually extends along one of the beams at the front of the bar.

The bar itself is square, and centrally located, with a separate dining room at the rear running off it. With a fearsome pair of antlers over the fireplace and a name like Tally Ho you could expect hunting memorabilia, and you won't be disappointed, with a row of different sized hunting horns, as well as a variety of plates and pictures providing interest on the walls. The pub is popular with older regulars and farmers alike, and so it has a familiar, country atmosphere with plenty of banter between customers and the friendly staff.

There are two menus on opposite sides of the bar the first one listing bar meals. These include sandwiches, baguettes and baked potatoes with the usual English fillings such as hand-carved ham and tomato, sausage and onion, cheese and onion etc. I had a well-presented warmed, crusty baguette filled with bacon, lettuce and tomato. It was served with salad garnish, dressing and crisps, and priced very reasonably at £3.50. The service was prompt and the friendly staff ensured I had enjoyed my meal at the end.

For those with larger appetites the second larger blackboard opposite lists the main meals. Once again these are mostly straightforward English fare including such dishes as Lamb Shank with Vegetables and a choice of Potatoes at £12.95 or home-made Steak and Kidney Pudding with Vegetables and Potatoes at £7.95. There is also a range of fish dishes, including homemade fishcakes and a variety of steaks. The chef also prepares an interesting range of pasta including such dishes as Smoked Salmon served with Tomato and Garlic at £7.95. Sunday lunch is a popular feature at the pub with traditional roasts.

The beer is well kept including Flowers and Larkins on tap, whilst for lager drinkers there is 1664 and 1664 Blanc, a fruity, white beer brewed in a 13th century style in northern France.

The Tally Ho is an enjoyable, down to earth pub where you can enjoy straightforward English food and drink at reasonable prices.

Biggin Hill is not far away with the air show usually held in September each year. More details can be found here. Other attractions in the area include Down House in the nearby, attractive village of Downe. It was at Down House that Charles Darwin lived with his family and worked on the scientific theories that culminated in the publication of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859. The house remains much as it was when Darwin lived here.
