The Ashes - Sports Bars In Maidstone - Country Pubs In Kent

Despite being a semi-regular in Maidstone's pubs this was my first visit to Ashes. I'd heard both good and bad reports from friends and colleagues but tried to go through the door without any preconceptions.

The pub is deceptively large and although it seemed pretty empty there were upwards of twenty people drinking and eating dotted around the place. The style is open plan with a conservatory bar, beer garden and a no smoking eating and drinking area. The decor is pretty typical of large modern Maidstone pubs; lots of bare wood with benches, sofas and bar stools.

Beers on sale included: Fosters, 1664, Carling, Hancock, Breakspears and John Smiths. Wide range of spirits, alco pops and cocktails. Different special offers advertised (Vodka & Red Bulls Jugs and 2 for 1 cocktails on Tuesdays).

Pub grub menu included; hot and cold sandwiches, jackets and hot meals. My sister in law reckons their Combo Platter (wings, mozzarella, onion rings, wedges, mushrooms, sweet 'n' sour sauce) is good. Food served until 3.00pm on weekdays.

Quick and speedy service at lunchtimes, slower at busy times, mixed lunchtime clientele, younger crowd in the evenings. The Ashes also shows live sports and generally has the TV's tuned into sports channels.

The Ashes is right in the centre of Maidstone, convenient for a lunchtime drink, has a bit of life in the evenings but not that different to some of the other big pubs within a five minute walk. I will be going back (probably this Friday after work).
