The Hare - Pubs In Langton Green - Country Pubs In KentThe Hare is part of the Brunning Price Group with a total of 13 pubs located mainly in the northwest, but with two pubs in the southeast, The Hare and The Jug in the centre of Horsham. The pub sits in the sought after village of Langton Green just on the western edge of Tunbridge Wells. The current manager, Chris Little, who was previously head chef has worked at The Hare since 1996. His passion and hard work enabled the pub to previously win Kent Dining Pub of the Year and subsequent entries in the Michelin Guide, the AA Pub Guide and The Good Pub Guide. The rooms have all been knocked through and with the high ceilings this gives a general feeling of space, which is vital considering how busy the pub becomes. Interesting bric-a-brac, prints and lots of dark wood provide a homely, but sophisticated air. The garden, at the rear, has attractive views over the village cricket green, and during the later months outside diners are lent a hand with gas heaters and lighting. Quality hand pumped beers include Greene King IPA and Abbot, as well Old Speckled Hen and Wadworth 6X as well as a handsome display of over 50 malt whiskies behind the bar. The menu is well thought out and regularly updated, including a variety of hearty fare with a reputation for good portion size. More unusual starters include Smoked Duck with Pink and Orange Grapefruit Salad and Sherry Vinaigrette (£4.95) and Seared Beef Carpaccio, with Grilled Artichokes, Parmesan Shavings, Rocket Leaves and White Truffle Oil (£6.95). There are also a number of interesting fish and seafood starters, along with vegetarian options. Main courses are predominantly meat based including the popular Braised Shoulder of Local Lamb with Roast Potatoes, Red Wine Sauce and Vegetables (£13.95) and Slow Roast Honey and Black Pepper Belly Pork, with Dauphinoise Potatoes, Spinach, Apple Sauce and Red Wine Jus (£13.25). Fish dishes include Whole Roasted Sea Bass (£13.95) and Seafood Pie served with Crusty Bread (£8.95). Those with lighter appetites can choose from a range of Light Bites, including Spinach and Ricotta Tortellini with Balsamic Infused Tomatoes, Deep Fried Rocket and Basil Sauce topped with Parmesan Shavings (£8.95) as well as the more conventional Home-cooked Ham, Free range Eggs and hand-cut big Chips (£7.50). Original sandwiches are also on offer including Smoked Salmon on Granary Bloomer with Lemon and Dill Creme Fraiche (£6.25) or Tomato Mozzarella and Pesto Sandwich on Poppyseed Bread (£4.75). Sweets and puddings are made almost exclusively on the premises and include such temptations as Bailey's Cheesecake with Fruit Coulis (£4.75) and Raspberry Creme Brulee served with Shortbread Fingers (£4.25). An extensive wine list includes mainly European white wines, whilst the New World and Australia provide the basis of the red wines. A selection of red and white house wines is available at about £11.00. The Hares' reputation is such that they
carry out little advertising, relying on word-of-mouth to provide
consistent bookings. Consequently, it is best to book, especially at busy
times. Parking is rarely a problem in the local lanes.
