The Prince Of Wales - Pubs In Herne Bay - Country Pubs In KentThe Prince of Wales in Herne Bay, Kent, restored to its Victorian heyday by brewers Shepherd Neame last year, has won the Refurbishment Award in the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Pub Design Awards. Architect Ben White and licensee Graham Dash from Shepherd Neame received the award at a CAMRA presentation lunch at the Three Pigeons, in Halifax, West Yorkshire in March. The Prince of Wales was also joint winner of the Joe Goodwin Award for Best Street Corner Local. Judges praised the £40,000 refurbishment for bringing back an authentic Victorian feel to the three-storey former hotel, which dates back to the mid-1800s. Traditional enclosed seating areas have been created by altering wooden panelling behind the bar to reveal a previously unused parlour room and specialist wood workers created a new bar featuring etched glass in classic Victorian style. The effect is enhanced by a wealth of period features including 200 water jugs, ornaments and planters containing ferns, rubber plants and aspidistras. Shepherd Neame's property and tenanted trade director George Barnes said: "The Prince of Wales has been a Shepherd Neame pub since 1879 and Ben and his team have done a fantastic job in recreating the building's Victorian heyday. We're delighted that our efforts have been recognised with this prestigious CAMRA award." You can find the Prince Of Wales at:
