The extensive refurbishment and rebuild after fire completely gutted the pub has now been completed and the Red Lion Inn is once again open for business. The fire left the pub without a roof and has taken months of building work to reopen. The Red Lion Inn was built as a Coach House in the 18th Century and has been lovingly restored by new owners, Michael and Vivien Harrington who aim to create a modern, contemporary pub with traditional values. The large beer garden is the ideal location for a glass of Pimms or a pint in the sun (if it ever comes!) and there is car parking in a town renowned for the lack of it. Michael and Vivien have a great deal of experience of owning and running successful gastro style pubs in the area. They started with The Bull Hotel in Sittingbourne from 1973 to 1981 then they bought Churchill’s Restaurant in 1980 which they ran to great acclaim until 1989. The last pub they ran was The White Hart Inn, Sevenoaks from 1996 to 2006. Michael and Vivien have created a Modern European menu that caters to all tastes. Examples of the starters include field mushrooms with Welsh rarebit (£5.90) and Grilled Feta Cheese & Roasted Vegetable Salad (£5.50). Mains include Confit Barbary Duck with Lentils & Balsamic Jus (£12.50) and Half a shoulder of local lamb with a beer mustard herb crust, served with mixed vegetables & Dauphinoise Potatoes finished with redcurrant & rosemary gravy (£14.50). Customers are reminded to leave room for a delicious home made pudding! The wine list is of particular note, containing over 40 wines. The majority are from the classic French regions but a number of superb wines from the New World have also made it onto the list. Michael says “After months of work it is now a relief to finally open. We have tried to create a modern, contemporary pub that maintains what’s left of the traditional features that will help give our customers a warm welcome.”
