The Tickled Trout - Pubs In West Farleigh - Country Pubs In KentThe Tickled Trout pub is set in a sleepy, rural location in the attractive village of West Farleigh. The building dates partly from the 14th century and has an appealing front with ample parking at the rear. A large garden to the left is well screened from the road with numerous tables and a children's play area. On entering the front door of the pub the main bar is to the left, whilst the restaurant area is situated on the right. The low-beamed ceilings throughout and dark red painted walls create a cosy feel, aided by a extensive beer mug collection hung on hooks from the beams. Numerous prints, mirrors, glassware and dried flower arrangements complete the rustic atmosphere. Whilst researching the pub I found several mentions of smugglers tunnels leading from the banks of the nearby River Medway up to the pub's cellar. Whilst chatting with the landlord he mentioned he had heard similar rumours before, but explained that any evidence in the cellar had long since been bricked up. However he did pass on observations from a previous customer who regularly used the River Medway about old excavations in the riverbank. In its more recent history the pub belonged to a group of four in Kent, including the pub's namesake in Wye, when the menu of all four was almost entirely fish orientated. The fish and seafood theme remains strong in the West Farleigh Tickled Trout today, with main courses such as Swordfish, Red Snapper, Sea Bream and fresh Tuna all served with potatoes and vegetables or salad at just over £12.00. For the more adventurous fresh Lobster, in a variety of guises, and Oysters are also available. The food is homemade wherever possible and the menu now stretches to over 70 dishes displayed on blackboards throughout the bar area. Delicious sounding meat dishes are also listed extensively, including Braised Lamb Shank and Pork Ribs. Chicken and Asparagus and Steak-and-Kidney Pies are staples, both ever popular and priced at £9.75. Flame grilled rump, sirloin or fillet steaks are offered as a deal for two, including a bottle of house wine, at a reasonably priced £30.00. Quality real ales are on offer including London Pride, Flowers and Spitfire, as well as the usual lagers and stouts, and an extensive wine list. Efficient service and good portion size ensure this pub is constantly busy, so it's best to book at busy times especially at the weekend when the renowned Sunday lunch draws customers from every direction. Local attractions include East Farleigh Bridge, which is the River Medway's most distinctive ancient crossing with its pointed arches and massive cutwaters, located about a 15 minute walk from The Tickled Trout. Well worth a visit, the bridge was originally built in the fourteenth century from local Kentish ragstone and 300 years later 12,000 tons of this same ragstone were transported across the bridge, bound for the London and the new cathedral of St Pauls.
