Ye Old Yew Tree At Westbere, Pubs in SturryFor many more Kent pubs click here, the current pub review is here. Driving through Sturry I saw a sign inviting me to visit '14th Century Inn at Westbere', well about a month ago I did just that. Reputedly the oldest Inn in Kent and one of the most ancient in England, built in 1348 it boasts connections to Queen Anne, an Archbishop of Canterbury and Dick Turpin. The building was used as a hospital during the English civil war. Local folklore also maintains there are two ghosts in the property. If you come to the pub to see some living English history, you won't be dissapointed, a roaring fire (in February) and tasteful interior are perfectly in keeping with the age of the building. It's a food pub but there is a traditional bar by the entrance (at the rear of the building). Excellent real ales (I can recommend the Harveys) alongside most of the usual tipples; If you are driving the filter coffee is good. Drinkers are as welcome as diners. So to the food; it's good, quality ingredients, well cooked and attractivly presented. Roast pork, sauteed potatoes red cabbage, apple sauce and gravy. The best roast pork I've eaten out in many a year. My partner had a warm tuna and cucumber baguette served with chips and salad. On the second visit I tried locallly sourced pork sauages with mash, peas and gravy. Simple yet excellent, Based on my experience I have no hesitation warmly recommending the food in particular and the pub in general, we will be returning. Other highlights from the menu: Starters:

Ye Old Yew Tree has three menus; lunch, dinner and a Sunday lunch menu, you can view them on the website. Both my roast pork and the sauasages cost around £9 .Starters cost from £4.50 and delicious baguettes from £6.95 The pub has about 25 covers so it's worth booking in advance if you are going at a busy time, there is a compact beer garden to the rear with a car park. It's in the heart of the small village of Westbere but easy enough find. You'll find Ye Old Yew Tree at:
