19/08/08 40 Firefighters Attend Blaze -
Bobbing More than 40 firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a breakers yard at Bobbing near Sittingbourne. Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called at 4.33pm to reports that a shed was alight. Eight appliances were sent to Sheppey Way where they found a building containing 200 tyres and engine parts was also alight. Crews had to temporarily withdraw from the scene after a small supply of domestic fireworks in the shed started to explode but no-one was hurt and the incident was quickly brought under control with the fire being extinguished by 5.51pm. Station Manager Daren Jenner led the incident response. He said: “The safety of our crews is paramount so we withdrew for about 10 minutes until the threat of fireworks and some cyclinders in the shed was over. “When we re-started operations, the firefighters worked extremely hard to make sure this potentially dangerous incident was under control very quickly and they prevented it from spreading to a nearby corn field.” The building – which measures 15 metres by 30 metres – was severely damaged and the shed and some fencing were completely destroyed. The cause of the blaze will now be investigated. More Kent news here. Kent news updates free to your mailbox with the Kent Review. |
