25/07/08 Healthy Schools Status - Kent Programme

Three-times British Junior Champion, former national 400m champion and Commonwealth Games athlete, Lesley Owusu, presented awards to 21 schools across Kent who have achieved Healthy Schools status.

More than 420 schools in Kent have now been awarded Healthy Schools status after working with the Kent Programme, which is delivered in partnership by Kent County Council (KCC) and Kent NHS.

Head of Health Promotion for the West Kent Primary Care Trust Jay Edwins joined Lesley and representatives from the schools for a special presentation.

She gave an inspirational speech about her athletic journey - from an active 10-year-old to a three-time British junior champion and five-cap senior international. She spoke about her strong work ethic and her desire to achieve excellence on and off the track.

Pupils from Burham CEP School took part in a presentation about their own healthy activities and their school restaurant. Students from Borden Grammar School spoke about their new sixth form sexual health drop in centre and how this has been very effective in reducing teenage pregnancy and sexual infections.

KCC’s Healthy Schools Programme is designed to support improvements through a whole-school approach to health and wellbeing, inclusion and educational achievement. Part of a national initiative, it sets out clear criteria that schools need to satisfy in order to become recognised nationally as a Healthy School.

These criteria focus on four core themes of Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE); healthy eating; physical activity and emotional health and wellbeing (including bullying issues).

A 100% of Kent schools are currently working towards becoming a Healthy School, with more than 70% now with the achieved status.

Head of Health Promotion for the West Kent Primary Care Trust Jay Edwins said: “It was a real privilege to meet such an inspiring and successful athlete. The pupils, students and staff could all relate to her speech which highlighted the fact that doing your best is more important than winning. Lesley’s determination, dedication and self-motivation undoubtedly made a positive influence on the young people who met her.”
