20/01/12 Improving Singing In School - New pilot scheme
Kent Music and Sing Up are joining forces to launch a pilot learning scheme this spring to improve singing in schools. They will investigate how primary schools use singing as a learning tool and identify any teacher training requirements to make improvements. Others aims include cross-school training, networking, shadowing opportunities, and partnering schools to share strengths and expertise. Initially, schools in Canterbury, Tonbridge and surrounding areas will be taking part, and if successful, the scheme will be rolled out to other parts Kent and the UK. Sing Up, which is led by Youth Music – the UK’s largest children’s music charity – will be teaching some of the schools a repertoire of songs to be performed at the Canterbury Primary School Recorder Festival on March 27. Kent Music development manager Laura Callaghan said: “It is well documented that singing is good for children and can help improve numeracy, motor skills, language development, health, and boost confidence. “Sadly, singing has disappeared from many primary school classrooms. The Sing Up scheme aims to support schools and teachers to use singing as a valuable and fun learning tool for pupils.” It is not too late for schools in both areas to register for the scheme.
