12/08/12 Deal Remembrance Rugby Match - Canada Road

In September 1989 a huge explosion at the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal killed 10 young Royal Marine Bandsmen, an eleventh died of his injuries a short time later. Three of the dead were members of the first team squad at Deal Wanderers Rugby Club, also based in the town.

A remembrance rugby match was first held in September 1990. This event has become an important annual fixture and 2012 sees the 22nd contest. The games now alternate between Deal and Portsmouth. In 2005 Deal Wanderers merged with Bettshanger RFC to form Deal and Betteshanger Lions RFC.

Deal and Betteshanger Lions RFC continue this tradition and will be hosting the 2012 game at the club's ground, The Drill Field, Canada Road, Deal on October 28th.

The club has announced an open invitation, the game begins at 1pm, entry is free, there is a bar and food will be available.
